The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) continues in 2025 with a critical update. The government has now made eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) mandatory for all beneficiaries. Failing to complete this step can lead to LPG disconnection and loss of subsidy. This step ensures that only authentic and deserving women take advantage of the scheme, reducing fraud and increasing transparency.
What is PM Ujjwala Yojana and Why eKYC is Now a Must
PM Ujjwala Yojana is a government scheme under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It supplies LPG gas connections to women belonging to poor families, predominantly in rural India. The major advantage lies in the direct subsidy transferred to the bank account of the woman, which keeps LPG at an affordable rate for poor families.
Until 2025, lakhs of women are availing themselves of this benefit. With expanding coverage, the government has now implemented eKYC to authenticate identities, remove bogus connections, and preserve efficiency in subsidy disbursement.
Who Can Avail eKYC: Eligibility Criterion
Not every individual is eligible for eKYC under this program. The government has formulated certain criteria for authentication:
Only women can apply and get eKYC under PMUY.
Minimum age has to be 18 years.
The name of the applicant must be enrolled in a BPL (Below Poverty Line) ration card.
Those women who already have a gas connection are not considered for this scheme.
The woman’s family should have an annual income of less than ₹2,00,000.
All these things are required to be fulfilled before going for the eKYC.
Documents Required for eKYC Process
To complete the eKYC successfully, you should have the following documents in hand:
Aadhaar Card
Bank Passbook
Mobile Number registered with Aadhaar
LPG Gas Connection Number
These are the documents that are needed regardless of whether you’re doing eKYC online or offline.
Step-by-Step: How to Fill Up PMUY eKYC Online Method
You can fill up the eKYC online via the official websites of your gas provider (e.g., My Bharat Gas, Indane, HP Gas). Here’s how:
Go to the official gas provider website (for Bharat Gas: my.ebharatgas.com).
Find the eKYC or Know Your Customer section.
Enter your Aadhaar number and registered mobile number.
Click on ‘Get OTP’.
Provide the OTP that has been sent to your mobile and click ‘Verify’.
Once it’s been verified, your eKYC is done.
Offline Method
If you want to go to a center instead, here’s the offline procedure:
Visit your local gas agency or Community Service Center (CSC).
Take a photocopy of your Aadhaar card and registered mobile number along.
Request the eKYC application form.
Fill in information including name, address, Aadhaar number, and gas connection number.
Append the copy of Aadhaar with the completed form.
Hand it over to the officer. They will process and authenticate your eKYC.
Either of the procedures will allow you to get the LPG subsidy without any disruption.
