The Indian weather is now completely under the monsoon grasp. From Delhi-NCR to the Northeast, rains have replaced the sweltering heat. Cloudy skies, gusty winds, and dropping temperatures have ushered in a new weather beat.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also released a new warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across some states, issuing a warning of possible disruption. Let’s see the region-wise forecast and intensity of rain to be expected in the next few hours.
Winds up to 60 km/h expected today; Yellow alert issued
Delhi Monsoon
has witnessed a perceptible drop in temperature since June 19 morning. With cloud cover and chilly winds passing over the capital, people have experienced the stark contrast after struggling with excessive heat. Even though there was light rain in the last two days, humidity continues to be high and discomforting.
The IMD has issued light rain or drizzle possible in many areas of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurgaon for today. Yellow alert is in effect, and wind speed could reach 40-60 km/h by nightfall. The weather shift is being credited to cyclonic winds in surrounding areas.
States Under Red and Yellow Alerts
The extent of the monsoon has spread to over half of the nation. There has been heavy rainfall in several areas. Jharkhand is particularly under scanner today, with forecast for heavy rain. The same is predicted for Odisha, Bihar, and Eastern Assam for continuous rains throughout the day.
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of light to heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur. The rainfall is likely to become heavy by evening and cause possible local flooding or interruptions on roads.
Rain Spreads Across Central and Coastal Zones
India’s central belt and coastal regions are also likely to witness significant rainfall today. As per private meteorological forecaster Skymet, areas in Gujarat and coastal Karnataka could experience moderate rain. Light to medium rain is also indicated for Konkan, Goa and West Bengal. Cyclonic circulation is affecting weather in South India, raising the likelihood of a storm in scattered areas. The IMD has cited this system as one of the reasons for widespread showers, which may continue until June 23.
Mumbai and Neighbourhood on High Alert
In Maharashtra, the IMD has also alerted Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts with a yellow alert. Although these places are used to receiving monsoon showers, today’s warning is subject to heavy spells, which could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. Citizens in the regions are urged to exercise caution, particularly during rush hour. The rain activity is forecasted to persist throughout the week, spreading more to the western and interior parts of the state.
