Delhi-NCR has witnessed heavy rain in the last 24 hours, providing much-needed relief from the blistering heat. While the pre-monsoon rains keep pouring, the humidity has decreased considerably, resulting in the weather being cooler and more bearable. But intense rain has also led to extensive waterlogging in parts of the city, disrupting traffic and causing flights to be diverted. The weather conditions are likely to continue as IMD threatens more rain.
Widespread Waterlogging Brings Capital to a Halt
In the past day, heavy rainfall across Delhi has caused flooding in many key areas. Localities such as the Delhi Cantonment underpass, Zakhira underpass, Pul Prahladpur, ITO, and parts of Najafgarh Road have seen knee-deep water accumulation. Vehicle movement has been severely affected, and long traffic jams were reported. In several instances, commuters had to abandon their vehicles due to submerged roads.
The weather’s effect did not stop at the roads alone. At Delhi airport, 12 flights were forced to divert their course owing to poor visibility and bad weather. The sudden outburst of rain has caused large-scale urban flooding that is likely to recur today as well.
Cooler Air but Caution Ahead: What IMD Says
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted additional rain today during the day, June 18. A yellow warning is issued, indicating chances of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind blowing at 50–60 km/h. Rainfall is expected to be light to moderate, primarily happening during the evening or night.
With this warning, authorities are issuing a word of caution for evening travelers. The IMD is predicting similar weather to persist on Thursday, with strong winds and scattered showers. On account of this, public transport services such as flights and trains could be further delayed.
No Heatwave in Sight, Temperature Drops Sharply
Finally, after weeks of scorching heat, Delhiites are enjoying a cool spell. The city is no longer facing heatwave conditions. With rain, the temperature has dropped significantly — today’s maximum temperature is likely to remain around 34°C, while the minimum could remain at 27°C.
As per weather analysts, monsoon rains will start soon, and the present showers are a part of pre-monsoon activity. Lack of humidity and significant temperature decline has caused a huge relief to citizens despite bringing the cost of disrupted movement and water-logged roads.
Be Ready for Disruptions: Yellow Alert Still in Effect
While Delhi-NCR is still fighting off high rainfall and uneven weather, people are being asked to keep themselves informed about the IMD bulletins. With thunderstorms, winds, and moderate rains predicted in the evening hours, the possibility of traffic congestion and flight delays remains strong. People are requested to plan their journey well and remain indoors when the rain is in full flow.
